Field-Level Security

The N4 data model includes information, such as equipment, yard positions, customs documents, and seal numbers, that may be considered proprietary information by most terminals and line operators. When considering the scope in which this data exists, it is evident that there is a need to control the data that N4 users are able to view.

N4 provides the administrators the ability to configure field-level security and control which fields a user group may view. The field-level security enables the administrators to hide specific fields from both the forms and list views in N4. For example, if the terminal does not want the trucking companies to see the seal numbers for a container, the administrator can use specific field-level privileges to prevent trucking companies from viewing the seal information for any container.

The most important benefit of field-level security is that the terminals have a better control over the information shared with third-party users and systems. In some cases this may involve the protection of proprietary information while in others it may restrict access to information that is not required by the third-party users and systems to perform their business. The terminal owns the information and should have the ability to control whether it is shared or not.

In N4, the field-level security is implemented through deny privileges. For more information on privileges, see Privileges view. (on page 1)

To search for all the available deny privileges in N4:

  1. Open the Administration Security Privileges Privileges view.

  1. In the Quick Search field, enter *DENY* and press Enter.

N4 displays all the deny privileges currently available for use. For more information on assigning specific privileges to user roles, see Roles view (on page 1).

A user with field-level deny privileges cannot view the fields in the following areas:

If a user with access to the secured columns creates a shared saved filter that includes the secured columns, the user with the deny privileges is unable to see the secured columns when selecting the shared saved filter.
